Cool, Starry Nights

Back in high school I used to love astrophotography, there is nothing like taking pictures of the stars. However the methods employed take great patience, clear skies, and expensive equipment--all of these obstacles became too great to continue my hobby. Long story short, I wanted to get-back-out and try my hand at some star-trail photos; these are fairly easy to do... enjoy:

You can see the north star just below the center of the frame, as well as some trailing of the Milky-Way "clouds" running from the upper left to the lower right.

And here's the moon!

Nice Will. What lens did you use at what camera settings?

Jake, I just set my camera to "night shot" and held it really, really still...

For real though, I'm still playing around to get my settings better. The star-trails image looks really washed-out, because the moon was so bright. I will try some more on a moonless night for improved results.

Love your night sky photos! We have good ole Columbus light pollution.

that's too bad Susan, it is becoming increasingly more difficult to get dark skies (without going to Nebraska).
